My project The Danger Within is about the Asse II nuclear storage facility near Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony.
In the 1970s, around 126,000 barrels of radioactive material were stored there, even though experts had advised against it. The reason for this was the ingress of water into the tunnels. In 2013, the German government ordered the retrieval of the nuclear waste. This is then to be transferred to an interim storage facility on the Asse site. However, this harbours further dangers.
I interviewed and portrayed local residents and was able to gain my own impression by taking a guided tour of the Asse mine. Those images show a fraction of a moment in time.
